The Underwater Photographer of the Year has just announced the winners of its 2019 photo contest. More than 5,000 images were submitted by photographers from around the world. Photographer Richard Barnden won the title of Underwater Photographer of the Year 2019 with his shot, “Gauntlet.” Barnden’s image shows the exact moment a grey reef shark catches and chomps down on a parrotfish. Richard explains the story behind his image:
“As I descended, hundreds of sharks covered the bottom. This unlucky parrotfish flinched, and that tiny movement alerted the swarm of sharks. The mayhem hurtled straight towards me and I instinctively pressed the shutter, moments later all that remained was a rain of parrotfish scales in the darkness, and this photo on my camera.”
Judges have selected the best pictures across 13 categories including Wide Angle, Macro, Wrecks, Behavior, Portrait, Black and White, Compact, Up and Coming, and in British waters, Wide Angle, Living Together, Compact, and Macro Shots.
