Tell us a little bit about you:
How long have you been a photographer?
What first drew you to portrait photography—and how did you discover it?
When I was 17 years old, I started bringing my Coolpix L100 to any party or friendly gathering I’d attend. Photographing my friends candidly for fun is what drew me to portrait photography. I then began stepping forward into different settings, purposely telling my friends that I wanted to photograph them for portraiture reasons. They were extremely supportive and it allowed me to creatively expand in that style.
How would you describe your style?
If someone is interested in portrait photography, what would you recommend they try doing to get into the field?
I’d recommend to study or read into psychology/anthropology. Then, to let go of any set rules so that there is room for presence. Oh, and maybe to start off capturing family members or friends. It can lead them to getting comfortable enough to capture portraits of strangers.
What kind of equipment do you use now, and what did you start with?
I started with a Blackberry phone camera! After realizing how much I would use it, I asked my parents for an actual point and shoot during Christmas and got a Coolpix L100. I now use a Nikon D7000 with 3 different lenses.
A photographer who inspires you?
Briefly describe a Day in the Life of Jessica Rivas!
Definitely begins with a hearty breakfast and continues with either being productive or lounging at home. There may be either an adventure, a work-out, or a creative project in between and my day ends depending how the afternoon went – I aim for smooth, flowing days 😊
