Born in Russia, photographer Nina Leen spent her childhood living in Italy, Switzerland, and Germany before she emigrated to the United States in 1939. Nina studied painting in Berlin. By 1945 she was one of the first female photographers to join the staff at LIFE magazine.

Despite the hardships of WWII, fashion in the 1940s still ruled as women everywhere embraced a more utilitarian look, were remarkably elegant and sophisticated. During her early years on the magazine, Nina Leen did a some of the most memorable and stunning photos of young ladies and teenagers.
