Timo Stammberger is a talented urban photographer who was born in 1980 in Hamburg, raised in Hamburg and Frankfurt and currently based in Berlin, Germany. Timo studied at the Ostkreuzschule für Fotografie in Berlin (School for Photography) and graduated in 2009. For his project ‘Underground Landscapes’, Stammberger takes photos of tunnels of mass transit systems world wide. His work requires a lot of dedication: Usually the subway companies don’t allow photographers into their network and even taking photos on the subway platforms is forbidden.
When I was a kid, I remember my grandfather often taking me on trips to a train station nearby which happened to neighbor a freight train yard. I immediately got fascinated by the atmosphere of the track landscape, the thunderous sound of trains passing by, followed by a complete calm. I’ve been a track romantic ever since. In 2003, through my former interest in graffiti writing, I started exploring the underground track landscapes of the cities I lived in: Barcelona, Berlin, Frankfurt and New York.
