Yana Mazurkevich Creates Powerful Photo Series Against Rape

Brock Turner, a former student-athlete at Stanford University, was released after serving three months in a county jail for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman behind a dumpster in January 2015.

Yana Mazurkevich is a talented 20-year-old photographer and student at Ithaca College in New York, one of the many people angered by Turner’s early release, decided to create a powerful photo series by showing the range of environments in which assault takes place. Her series “It Happens” was created in partnership with Current Solutions, a platform that aims to raise awareness about sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and gender-based violence. Each of the nine photographs in “It Happens” is accompanied by a statement from a survivor of sexual assault.
